Whether you want to or not you both could use the extra walk around the block why not have some fun doing it? Exercise is a great way to bond with your dog, keep you both healthier and happier, burn off stress for both of you, get the mental juices flowing, and more!
Most dogs love to exercise and find joy doing it with you so make is fun! Depending on the type, breed and age of your dog the distance and duration matters. Most house dogs do great with short and long walks, adding in a run or two helps stretch out their limbs and joints.
Here are a few ideas:
Once your dog fully understands a stay or wait command, and listen well off leash find a nice hillside area in your neighborhood or park have them wait either up and down the hill. After a few times expand the distance once they get better and a few good runs. Always remember to reward successful runs and ignore the unsuccessful ones.
Hide and seek
A great game to play on a rainy day in doors when you can't take a long walk. Have your dog in a sit or down stay in one area of the house and go to another area, use your recall command and once they find you give them a treat and/or play they favorite toy if possible. Once they become good at this game with the you, move on to harder hiding spaces like closet, under beds. With the same process beginning in a sit or down stay play hide and seek with toys and treats.
Although physical exercise is need, mental exercise through obedience training, mental games and more also exercise and tire dogs out on a different level. Working dogs mentally helps alot with impulse control allowing dogs to think before acting. Scent games can be as simple as throwing a toy, having the dog on leash, and removing the leash to allow the dog to find the toy using his nose. Down below is a great example of a Scent work game with my dog.
