This Post is a continuation from Social Hour so we will continue to discuss socialization,  and the importance, as well as so do's and don'ts.
It is so important to socialize your dogs to more than dogs because this world is so big and no day will ever be the same so you and your dog need to be prepared. I was called to do training for a year old rottweiler that weighs 160 pounds and is still growing. The owner first adjective was "Aggression" . Which is common in the dog world is the most overused word. The dog barks it's aggressive, it jumps it's aggressive, it lungies on leash it's aggressive, it's big and it moves guess what its aggressive. Which in reality is not the case at all. So a dog like this should have been extremely socialized with dogs, people, sounds, objects, and different surface, grooming, riding in the car and more by now. Unfortunately he has not done any of them and spends majority of his days tethered or in the backyard.  This a major disaster waiting to happen  because this dog can harm other and even itself so please I advise seek help. The DO's
  • Slowly introduce to all kinds of people, clothing, accessories, and the way people move in this world (Old, Young, Races, Gender, wheelchair, crutches, Hats, Glasses, Uniforms, Boots, Bikes, skateboards, runners, )
  • Other animals (Horses, cat, hamsters, chickens, etc)
  • Different Surfaces, walkways  (sand, rocks, grass, pavements, tiles, shiny floors, wood, carpet, stairs
  • Water, Bath tubs are a great start with toys as puppys moving on to lakes and beaches on leash
  • Grooming & Handling- practice being carried and being held by paws, ears, tails, toes, stomach, face, etc
  • Practice getting in and out cars then riding in cars, drive thru windows, areas with a lot of pedestrians
  • Other dogs- old, young, small, old, hyper, sluggish, practice obedience around other dogs
  • loud Outdoor noises, trains, trucks, airplanes, buses, lawnmowers, motorcycles, and more
  • Indoor noises- Vacuum, blenders, Loud music tv,  doorbells, phone, smoke alarms
  • Take regular visits to the vet, groomer, daycare facilities, pet friendly stores, friends homes (even when you don't need anything, makes the next trip easier)
  •  New experiences like getting left alone with someone new, going to new areas like the city, or suburbs, farms

The Dont's
  • Never force your dog to do anything it should always be a decision they make on their own
  • Never make things stressful. If they show signs of distress remove them and take things slower
  • Never have high expectations what they can tolerate is their limit
  • Always start with a little/ or distance  and  then advance to more/or closer when they are comfortable with a little/ or distance
  • Never go anywhere your dog will be trapped and caged in Always have a plan to exit when things get crazy or hectic for your dog
  • Never set to high and fast goals for your dog Always set realistic goals for your dog, ones you know they can achieve and build from there
  • Never Correct a fearful dog, this will turn into reactivity, aggression, or a complete shut down
  • Never take the same way when going on walks, always find new trails, path, and areas for you and your dog to explore.

The way I look at it is you train the dog or the dog trains you!
